How to Boost WiFi Signal
Instructions
- Move all electrical appliances away from your wireless router, including cordless telephones, microwaves and even televisions. These items can lower the range of your router because of the wavelengths they run on.
- Turn the antennae on your router in different directions to see which way works best. It might be helpful to have someone else use the computer while you're doing this, so she can point out what spot is best.
- Download the latest software for your router. Sometimes your WiFi signal will drop because it's running on an old system, but this can be avoided by using the latest software.
- Place your router in a central location, close to all the computers in your house. If you have only one computer using the WiFi signal, move the router closer to that computer and you'll be surprised at how powerful your WiFi signal is.
- Change your WiFi signal so only the computers you approve can use the system. This can usually be done by calling your Internet provider and asking that your system be changed to a password protected one. This prevents anyone outside your home from using your network, which can limit your signal.
- Attach a ground plane on your router. This can be done with a simple piece of sheet metal, which you attach to the existing antenna. This boosts your signal by increasing the distance it goes.
- Purchase a stronger antenna from any electronics supply store and install it to your router. The antenna can be expensive, but it's one of the best ways to boost your WiFi signal.
